How to Airbrush Realistic Veins
When you're doing veins it's really important to keep in mind that because of how the vein lays underneath the skin, it isn't always gonna be just one consistent color. You gotta go a little heavier in some spots and lighter in some spots to create a little sort of variation and that'll make it look more realistic and have a sense of more translucency.

Creating a Translucent Illusion
This is a latex mask, and the big difference in painting a latex mask versus silicone with the way that I paint when doing a latex mask or even foam latex; we're dealing with an opaque material to begin with, so a lot of the translucency that you'll see in this type of paint job is actually created in the layers of paint that we use.
(Painting is drawing. Draw all the time, and your airbrushing will improve.)
Painting Silicone vs. Latex
And silicone, you don't really have that problem of translucency cause the material you can mix it so that it's already very translucent. So when you paint a silicone... you still do the layers of colors except the layers of colors you put on [are] very, very light, and you build translucency that way... cause if you put on too much paint and make it too opaque you can kind of destroy the intrinsic translucency of silicone. The first time I painted with silicone I totally destroyed the paint job cause I was so used to painting this way and adding layers and layers of paint, opaque paint, to create a translucency which I didn't have to in silicone.
(With opaque materials such as Foam Latex, you must create the "illusion" of translucency.)
Using Linework to Airbrush
One thing that's really important to do when you're airbrushing... is to learn how to draw. Cause a lot of what you do with an airbrush is called linework. Where you're literally going in, for instance, when you paint veins, you have to be able to draw veins on paper to look realistic in order to be able to translate that into a paint job with an airbrush. So practice drawing all this stuff. Every mottling, every little thing you do, it's all drawing, really.
(A great paint job is all about the details. And Steve Wang is the detail MASTER.)
