Run Like Hell by Jeff Dixon

By Jeff Dixon - Author Run Like Hell

When a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound if no one is around to hear it?

When a book is released, and the publisher doesn’t promote it, does it ever get read?

One of these is a wide-reaching question for the ages, and the other is a smaller-scale question for our times. Yet, I’d be willing to wager that most readers here at the SWSCA are more curious about the second question because it pertains to art—and we’re all artists here.

Why Artists Need an Audience

When you’re an artist, you love to create. You love that elation of taking a blank piece of paper and turning it into a story or a chunk of clay and molding it into a masterpiece. That’s foremost on our radar. Always. But an artist who says they only create for themselves isn’t being quite honest. Artists of any medium want their work seen. Even a notorious recluse like Stanley Kubrick wasn’t making movies for himself. He yearned for an audience. Whether people like a piece or not is beyond the point. Art is best served when it reaches an audience.

The Story of One Man's Mission to Escape From Hell

Hey, I’m Jeff Dixon, and I used to write for this amazing Stan Winston School. I’m writing this post to inform you about my new graphic novel, Run Like Hell. It’s a twisted book about one man’s mission to escape the demon, frat boy, mime, diva, clown, Wal-Mart, and pet peeve-filled cesspool of Hell. I like to describe it as a classic escape story like Logan’s Run, only set in Hell, and you’re tripping on mushrooms.

Here are a few quotes from some of its more famous fans:

"If clowns freaked you out before, it's about to get a lot worse. Funny, edgy, and wholly original... run like hell to read this book." -- Damon Lindelof (Co-creator of Lost)

"Wicked and absurdist, I loved it!" -- Stephen Susco (The Grudge, The Possession)

"Amazing! Dazzling! Marvelous! Staggering! Thrilling! These are but a few of the words I found in a thesaurus after Jeff Dixon asked me for a quote for his graphic novel." -- Sam Simon (Co-creator of The Simpsons)

A Crazy Journey That Has Just Begun

Run Like Hell was illustrated by genius artist Karl Slominski. His eye-popping visuals need to be seen in print to be fully appreciated. It’s been a cult book for years before it was fully fan-funded on Kickstarter and is now out for a wide print release. The only problem is what I mentioned earlier… the publisher isn’t promoting it. Not their fault actually, as they aren’t promoting anything right now. But still, the problem remains. This book needs to be announced in order to find an audience. That’s where places like the incredible people at the SWSCA come in. They are fellow artists who know the process. Run Like Hell has had more of an insane roller coaster ride to get to print publication than you could ever imagine. If you really want to read more about that journey, head to my blog at www.scaryhorrorwriter.com and read the four-part series titled “The long and torrid history of Run Like Hell” under “Latest News.” It’s enlightening, to say the least.
