Christien Tinsley is an Award winning makeup artist and one of the leading Special Makeup Effects creators for film and television. Tinsley has been honored with an Academy Award® for Technical Achievement, and Academy Award® Nomination for Best Makeup: THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, Three Emmy® Nominations (Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for a series, Miniseries, Movie or a Special): NIP/TUCK, GLEE, AMERICAN HORROR STORY, an IFFA Award for Best Makeup as well as the Silver Lotus Award for Best Makeup: PAA. He also was awarded an Emmy® for his work on BEHIND THE CANDELABRA.
Tinsley most recently wrapped production on the first season of MOB CITY and Spike Lee’s remake of OLDBOY. Tinsley owns and operates Special Makeup Effects company Tinsley Studio and wholesale/manufacturing company Tinsley Transfers, Inc.
Tinsley was born and raised in Washington State and made the move to California at the age of 17 to pursue a career in makeup effects. Tinsley quickly garnered a reputation for inventiveness and raw talent and after a few short years he was provided the opportunity to work with his role model Rick Baker on Ron Howard’s HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS. Tinsley’s next film was Michael Bay’s PEARL HARBOR where he was inspired to develop a temporary tattoo known as the Tinsley Transfer™, a timesaving alternative to specialty makeup application.
In 2004, while working on Mel Gibson’s THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, Tinsley took his transfer idea one step further by developing a process known as the “Prosthetic Transfer.” He was nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Makeup (2005) for his work on the film and just two years later the Prosthetic Transfer Technique he developed garnered him an Academy Award® for Technical Achievement (2007).
Throughout his career, Christien has provided film and television with some of the most recognized characters and effects in such films as THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD, THE STONING OF SORAYA M, JONAH HEX, GANGSTER SQUAD and television shows such as PRISON BREAK and SONS OF ANARCHY. He has worked with the Cohen Brothers over the years creating memorable villains such as Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and Lucky Ned Pepper (Barry Pepper) on TRUE GRIT.
Christien continues to own and operate Tinsley Studio and Tinsley Transfers, Inc. while maintaining his working relationships as a makeup artist and character designer for a list of Hollywood’s best Directors, Actors, Producers and Studios.
Christien’s most recent films include: GANGSTER SQUAD, MIB 3, LABOR DAY, and OLDBOY. Tinsley also provides tattoo and prosthetic transfers to numerous television series.
